There are numerous ways to form money as a content writer.
In my one year of freelancing, I’ve remodeled $10,000 working part-time hours.
The goal of this post is straightforward — to point out you all the ways I’ve made money from writing to offer you inspiration — because most writers only believe getting paid to write down blog posts and emails.
As you’ll see below, those made up an honest chunk of the income, but they weren’t the sole ways. within the past two-plus years, I’ve earned money writing a minimum of 15 alternative ways .
With such a lot changing within the online space, there haven’t been more opportunities to earn money as a content writer.
Here’s the thing, writing isn’t easy for many people.
So if you possess this skill and may help people get their message ahead of their audience, no matter the niche, you’ll succeed as a contract writer.
Here are 15 ways I’ve made money as a contract writer without writing on my very own blog.
1. Blog Posts
I would say that 60% of my $10,000+ freelance writing income has been from writing blog posts.
Since i used to be a blogger from 2016 to 2018, these weren’t that tough on behalf of me to find out . Some were ghostwritten, et al. had my name attached to them.
Let’s get real, most blog posts aren’t sexy or glamorous.
But they’re the foremost consistent thanks to make money as a contract content writer.
I’ve been paid to write down about nearly everything including:
- Personal finance
If you would like consistent money monthly as a writer, start by finding blog writing clients. These clients are dependable and make it easy to forecast your monthly income.
At first, I suggest that you rate your work based on the word. If you are a new writer, start at 0.1 cents per word and work hard.
Finally, confirm you determine a distinct segment so you’ll become an expert and lift your rates!
The week I quit my 9–5, I published my first book, “Advice to My Younger Self.”
At the time, i used to be 29 years old and had aspirations of being subsequent millennial finance guru. I wanted to assist everyone learn what college didn’t teach them.
I thought this book was getting to land me on podcasts, talk shows, and supply passive income for years.
Well, that dream was short-lived.
The book made maybe $700 (including the additional copies my parents bought handy out and brag that their son was a writer).
Needless to mention , I quickly realized that my first book wasn’t getting to make me 1,000,000 aire or help a million people.
But still, I need to say i used to be a printed author at 29 years old and crossed something off my bucket list.
While my first book didn’t make me rich, it gave me some experience.
After one among my writing clients enjoyed working together, he asked me to ghostwrite his book.
While it’s yet to urge published, I got purchased it and it led to my highest income month ever.
The book ended up being 65,000 words and that i got paid $13,000. Just a touch quite my $700 for my first book.
So if you would like to write down a book and money is your main goal, I suggest ghostwriting for somebody else. Unless you’ve got a huge social media following, good luck self-publishing.
At the top of 2018, I landed my first writing client through Instagram.
He saw my motivational content, clicked the link in my bio, visited my writing website, and reached out via DM.
The first worked on was an eBook lead magnet. I ended up creating several for him and that they ranged between 5,000 to 10,000 words.
5. My eBook
I also tried my hand at self-publishing and purchased a course to guide me through it.
Even though my first book didn’t make me rich or famous, I liked the thought of making passive income.
Needless to mention , this concept failed. I bet I made $100 total, not enough to buy the course. Plus, it took way an excessive amount of time.
So if your goal is to self-publish eBooks via the Kindle store, confirm you outsource the maximum amount as possible, study Amazon ads, and find your niche.
Email marketing isn’t dead (despite what some online gurus say).
Yes, email marketing has been a gentle decline over the past five to 10 years, but it’s still the simplest thanks to sell anything to your audience.
Email writing may be a good way to form consistent money as a writer.
Clients need writers to assist tell their story and I’ve helped create several email campaigns. a number of them include:
- Nurture sequences
- Weekly newsletters
- Online course launch
I’m still a rookie during this category, but I decide to experiment tons more with copywriting and email marketing in 2020.
6. Lead Magnets
Another way to form money writing is by creating lead magnets for clients (AKA freebies, freemiums, list-builders, opt-ins, etc.)
This is differently I’ve been paid as a writer and a way that’s been relatively easy also . Since the content isn’t getting published online, you don’t need to worry about SEO, so it accelerates the whole writing process.
These projects are usually a hard and fast fee or per word, as a number of them are short eBooks which are adore a long-form blog post.
7. Rewriting Content
As you recognize , not all content is made equally.
With Google constantly updating their algorithm, it’s important to refresh content. Some savvy clients also will have you ever update past posts from yourself or other writers.
For example, one among my golf clients is refreshing all of his content that isn’t ranking on page one. to form the required updates, he sends me a link of the post within Surfer SEO to form necessary updates.
The SEO tool shows you what you would like to try to to so as to urge that article to rank properly. Maybe it’s removing keywords, adding a particular number of words, removing headings, adding LSI keywords, and more.
For rewrites, we agree on a flat fee beforehand . this is often pretty easy as you don’t need to come up with new content from scratch.
8. Online Course Content
The online learning space is booming!
With numerous entrepreneurs, thought leaders, and influencers creating online courses, they have writers to assist them turn their knowledge into a course.
I’ve written the content for 2 online courses within the personal development niche for an entrepreneur. i used to be tasked with creating lesson plans (basically blog posts), video scripts, and worksheets.
One may be a six-module course that paid $3,000 and therefore the other was a 12-module massive course that paid $11,000!
Remember, this is often a growing market and one I highly encourage you to pursue as a writer.
As online learning is growing, podcasts aren’t far behind.
According to Podcast Insights, there are over 30 million episodes as of January 2020. Yet, consistent with an equivalent article, only 51% of the population have listened to a podcast, which suggests there’s an enormous amount of growth potential.
I’ve been hired to create:
- Show notes
- Podcast scripts
- Social media captions
If you’re a replacement writer, this is often an excellent thanks to meet podcasters, grow your network, and make money writing.
10. Social Media Captions
Nothing fancy here, just writing captions on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn for several clients.
These are usually a flat-fee for every post or something that’s a part of a monthly retainer package.
While I haven’t done plenty of voice-overs, i used to be ready to write one that ended up going viral with 2,000,000 views!
But after they heard my voice on my show, “Inspire Your Success” podcast, that they had me do voice-over work also . I sent within the audio file (which took about three takes and only 40 minutes) and it had been done.
The pay was only a couple of hundred bucks, but the exposure has been epic. They added the amazing visuals to the video and now, two million people have heard it worldwide!
Don’t forget, money isn’t everything
Knowing that my message potentially impacted 2,000,000+ people with my words is priceless.
